Mayor Kimberley Driscoll and the Salem Beautification Committee announce the 8th annual Pumpkin Decorating Contest and Display.  The contest is open to all Salem children up to the age of 14 years old.  These decorated pumpkins are placed in a display trailer on the Salem Common for visitors and residents to view during the weeks leading up to Halloween.  Pumpkins are judged in three age categories and participants can win prize money donated by Fiesta Shows.

Mayor Driscoll commented, “This contest and display has been a great way to show how creative our young residents are and showcase their talents to the thousands of tourists who visit Salem in October.”

Beautification Committee Chairperson Lisa Lyons stated, “This is such a fun way to celebrate Halloween and get our young children involved in the community. It is amazing to see how many people visit the display and take pictures of the pumpkins.  Last year we had almost two hundred pumpkins on display.”

The City of Salem’s Beautification Committee will be on hand to receive decorated pumpkins on the Common on Saturday, October 17th from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm, and Sunday, October 18th from 10am-12noon.  At noon time on Sunday, Beautification Committee members will judge and announce the winning pumpkins. Mobile pay app for parking meters

From: Robert K McCarthy
Councillor Ward One

Salem Mayor Kim Driscoll is pleased to announce that the City will be launching the mobile pay app, Passport Parking, for the City’s on-street parking meters on Wednesday, October 14.
All meters will have a new sticker with easy instructions on how to use the app to pay for parking. Simply download the app, enter your space number and credit card or coupon information, and select how much time you wish to purchase. Users can set up a virtual wallet in the app, to help pay for future parking sessions, as well, or if they would like to more conveniently add time to an existing parking session. The app accepts all major credit cards, as well as coupon codes from local restaurants and businesses.
The app includes an alert function to automatically notify someone when their parking session is about to expire and allow them, if they have not exceeded the time limit, to add time to their parking session from their mobile device without having to return to the meter.
There is no change in parking rates or enforcement hours with this change. In addition, conventional payments by coin or, at applicable meters, by credit card, will still be accepted. The app will shortly also be available for City surface lots, on a date yet to be announced.
For more information, please see the FAQ for the Passport Parking app. The app itself can be downloaded from your mobile app store by searching for "Passport Parking."
