Hot dogs, drinks and ice cream will be sold. Bring your lawn chair or blanket and spend time listening to live music on Endicott Mansion's veranda. Beer & wine for purchase.

The Salem Maritime Festival is hosted by the National Park Service on the wharves and in the historic buildings of Salem Maritime National Historic Site on Derby Street in Salem. This year’s 2–day festival offers an exciting array of activities, demonstrations, and exhibitors including live music and dance, free harbor cruises on both Saturday and Sunday, a magic show, traditional craft demonstrations, re-enactors, live animals, the crew of the USS Constitution, kayaking and paddle boarding, kite-flying, remote-controlled boats, and much more!

A Marathon Reading of The Scarlet Letter

With the help of many volunteers on Saturday, July 7th starting at 9:00 AM we will read The Scarlet Letter from beginning to end. Hosted by the Salem Maritime National Historic Site we invite you to join us from the beginning or stop by to listen as the novel progresses. Watch for a special "Hawthorne's Custom House" tour and the opportunity to make your own scarlet letter to publicly state your personal sins.

We ask everyone interested in helping to read to please email gavin_gardner@nps.gov. He will be pulling together the volunteer list and organizing a planning meeting later in June to brief all of the readers. Let us know by June 15 if you are interested in volunteering for a five minute reading slot.

Salem Maritime National Historic Site  will be hosting “Enduring Hawthorne: A Marathon Reading of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter.”  “In partnership with The House of Seven Gables, Salem Athenaeum, and Essex National Heritage Area, and with a lot of help from the community, the reading will take place under a tent in front of the Custom House.

Salem Maritime is currently looking for volunteers to assist in this epic feat. If interested, please contact Gavin Gardner by email at gavin_gardner@nps.gov. A list of volunteers will be developed and a planning meeting will be held later in June.  Please contact Gavin by June 15th to be included as a volunteer reader.
