Styrofoam Recycling Program

SalemRecycles is starting a neighborhood-based styrofoam recycling program.  Styrofoam is not accepted in our recycling bins, but ReFoamIt in Peabody will take and recycle styrofoam.  SalemRecycles is looking for foam tzars to collect styrofoam in neighborhoods and bring it to ReFoamIt once a month.  If you are interested in being the Historic Derby Street Neighborhood foam tzar, are interested in sharing power in a multiple tzarship, or would just like more information, please contact me by e-mail or at 617-416-4390.

Cable Replacement update

Dear Neighbors --
Thanks again for following our newsletter updates. Here's the latest update on our work.

We're happy to report that duct bank installation on Cypress Street is complete. Contractors finished their work one week ahead of schedule, marking the completion of all underground duct bank construction for the Salem Cable Project. The remaining work in this area will primarily take place inside the Canal Street Station.

With the new transmission cables installed between Salem Harbor Station and the manholes on Fort Avenue, contractors are expected to being installing cable to connect the manhole locations on Hawthorne Boulevard, and Washington Square South. Please note that this work will take place from the Hawthorne Boulevard work site manholes, and is projected to last for approximately one week (weather depending).

As you may have noticed, cable installation is ongoing near the Washington Square South manholes. Contractors paused their work this week to accommodate a funeral service at O'Donnell's. As such, contractors may need to expand their timeline into next week at this location to make up for the time gap.

Please note that moving forward, most work will be focused on installing and splicing new cables, installing equipment in manhole, and finishing any remaining work inside the Canal Street Station.

As always, police details will be present to facilitate vehicle and pedestrian traffic management around construction sites. We ask that those on foot exercise caution when approaching these active work areas to minimize risks to personal safety, and to avoid any interference with construction.

Salem Publishes 2016 Snow Brochure


The City of Salem has updated its Snow Emergency Brochure for 2016. The brochure contains important information to help you through the winter months. Outlined in the brochure is how the city notifies its businesses and residents when a snow emergency will be declared and cancelled, information regarding snow plowing operations, alternative designated parking areas during snow emergencies, and residents’ responsibilities regarding snow removal.
 

New this year is the creation of a Downtown Snow Emergency District. “The City realizes that businesses and restaurants continue to operate during snow fall,” said Mayor Kim Driscoll, “This district will allow patrons to park on these designated downtown streets for a longer period of time.”
When the City declares a snow emergency for its main arteries and neighborhoods, it will not go into effect in the newly created Downtown Snow Emergency District until midnight (12:00 a.m.). For example, if a snow emergency is declared to become effective at 8:00 p.m. on any given day, it will not go into effect until midnight that evening in the downtown area defined below. However, starting at midnight (12:00 a.m.) on the night the snow emergency is declared, it shall be unlawful for any vehicle to be parked on streets in this district. Any vehicles parked on streets in this district after midnight will be ticketed and towed. The streets included in this district are as follows:
Streets in Downtown Snow Emergency District:
Washington Street; Federal Street (from North Street to St. Peter Street); Essex Street (from North Street to Hawthorne Boulevard); Lynde Street; Norman Street; Church Street; Central Street (Essex Street to Derby Street); New Derby Street; Derby Street (Lafayette Street to Orange Street); and Hawthorne Boulevard.
The Downtown Snow Emergency District will be in effect unless otherwise noted due to too severe or extreme snowfall. Please be aware that snow plowing will still take place in this district during the entire snow event.
Residents who park in a snow emergency parking lot during a snow emergency must remove their vehicles at the conclusion of the snow emergency or they will be towed at the owner’s expense. It is especially important to remove vehicles parked in public school lots at the end of the snow emergency.
Residents and businesses are encouraged to sign up for automated phone messages and emails generated by the City’s CodeRED system and also for City Alerts and City News and Announcements generated from the salem.com website to promptly receive snow emergency information throughout the winter months. The City recommends you register for both Code Red Messages and City E-Mail Alerts at http://www.salem.com/subscribe.

January Supper Out

Brodies Seaport ImageThe HDSNA's annual 'January Supper Out' will be Wednesday, January 20th at Brodie's Seaport at the corner of Derby and Wharf from 6-8pm.

You’re invited to the annual HDSNA January Supper Out on Weds., Jan. 20 at Brodie’s Seaport at 215 Derby Street (corner of the Wharf Street). Social hour is 6-6:30 pm, dinner is at 6:30 pm.
You have two options for dinner:
  • $25 Special – this is a flat fee and includes coffee or soft Drink, an entrĂ©e from the winter menu and dessert. Tax and tip is included. Reservation is required for this price; deadline is January. 16!
  • Order off the Menu” - Order anything off the menu ala carte (such as soup, salad, entrees, appetizers, etc.). Tax and tip is your responsibility.
A cash bar is available.
Please email your reservation to Ellen Fleming Clark at ellenflemingclark@gmail.com or drop off a check to reserve.

If you want the $25 flat fee, drop off your check to Ellen at 58 Derby Street by Saturday, January 16. If you make a reservation but don’t drop off a check we will change your reservation to “Order off the Menu” and you can pay ala carte prices at the restaurant. Make checks payable to Historic Derby Street Association. Please use our RSVP form.
Please note that the restaurant hosts a “Musical Bingo” on Wednesday nights and it will start at 7:30. We are all invited to stay and have some fun playing!
