Community members were invited to explore and engage in a series of topics to connect to and understand diverse immigrant experiences. Historic and current tension between Americans’ acceptance of immigrants, identity and acculturation, Americans’ economic relationship with immigrants, and the interdependent relationship between immigration and popular culture were all topics discussed. Use the hashtag #h7gables to be considered for our Photo of the Month Creating a Finding Aid for Emmerton's Papers This spring, The House of the Seven Gables was able to develop a finding aid, cataloging a portion of its archives, with the help of graduate student Megan Donoghue. Ms. Donoghue, a Salem State graduate history student is enrolled in Salem State University’s Archives and Records Management course taught by Professor Beth Bower. Working under the direction of the Gables’ Collections Manager Susan Baker-Leavitt, Donoghue focused on one specific part of the larger Gables archives collection – the papers of founder Caroline O. Emmerton. The Emmerton papers, previously un-processed, were inventoried and a finding aid document created that will make the contents of the archive more accessible. From professional researchers to everyday history buffs, the finding aid will assist people in locating specific documents within Emmerton’s archive. This includes some of Emmerton’s original handwritten manuscripts. The trip includes a visit to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island to learn about the experiences of turn-of-the-century immigrants, the effects on their families, and how it shaped their newly adopted homeland. In the afternoon, the group will visit the 9-11 Memorial Site, the powerful Memorial paying tribute to those who died in the 9-11 terrorist attacks. Last year alone, our organization welcomed over 110,000 visitors from all 50 states and nearly 60 countries, taught Adult ESL and Citizenship preparation classes to over 100 students, provided educational programs for nearly 10,000 school children, and offered 75 public programs. This is all thanks to the support of benefactors like you! Thanks to our dedicated supporters in the first month of the Annual Fund we have raised over $17,000! Join today!   What's New in Preservation Our 1668 Turner-Ingersoll Mansion, better known as The House of the Seven Gables, has a new coat of paint! Our painters put the final coat of paint on just in time for the mansion to be the backdrop of our blooming Spring garden. We want to extend our deepest thank you to Aubuchon Hardware of Haverhill for their generous support of this project. One of Caroline Emmerton’s goals was to preserve the house for future generations and this new coat of paint will help us ensure that. Be sure to stop by and see!
