May at The Gables

For The Gables, stories are at the core of what we do. We share them, collect them, and set the stage for them. Stories connect us ─ from guided tours of the historic campus recounting the past, to naturalization ceremonies on the seaside lawn forging a promising future.

Here is just one of the many stories that highlight our efforts and impact through education:

Romeo Zoquier, 95 years old, is currently enrolled in citizenship classes offered by The Gables. He was among the first Dominicans in the area and worked at a leather factory for several years. Mr. Zoquier’s daughter, Altagracia, recently became a US citizen with the aid of The Gables’ classes and is now helping her father with his citizenship studies. The Zoquier family is one example of immigrants who participate in our Settlement Programming to attain their goals.

Admissions, memberships, and merchandise sales are integral to our operations but only cover a portion of what we do. We must rely on your generosity so that The House of the Seven Gables can continue to be an essential part of our shared history and bright future.

Your gift to the Annual Fund today helps us share and tell stories tomorrow.

TONIGHT: The final Becoming American Community Conversation

The final Becoming American community conversation, The Search for General Tso, will take place TONIGHT at The Gables at 6:00 PM. This unique documentary will spur a conversation about immigration and pop culture.

The Search for General Tso asks: “If Chinese Americans comprise only 1 percent of the U.S. population, why are there Chinese restaurants in almost every city across America?” Using research from Jennifer 8. Lee’s 2008 book, The Fortune Cookie Chronicles, director Ian Cheney shows his audience how “Chinese food is all American.”

We are delighted to say that our painters are finally putting a fresh coat of paint on The Gables! New England is probably one of the trickiest places to plan for any outdoor project, let alone a full paint job on one of the largest timber-framed mansions in North America!

Be sure to stop by and see our freshened up 1668 historic house in the coming weeks. On your visit, be sure to stroll through our gardens and grounds.  Our garden staff has been hard at work and there is a lot in bloom!

Be sure to stop by our Museum Store and pick up a copy of The Fortune Cookie Chronicles, during the month of May.

The Fortune Cookie Chronicles is one of the inspirations for our final Becoming American program on May 1. Did you know that there are more Chinese restaurants in America than McDonald’s, Burger King, and Wendy’s combined? In a compelling blend of sociology and history, Jennifer 8. Lee traces the history of Chinese-American experiences through the lens of the food.

On May 28, the author will be speaking at The Gables and will be signing books after her talk!
Your contribution today will strengthen our evolving, inclusive, American story for tomorrow.
