Snow Emergency in effect Sat. Feb. 21st @10pm

The City of Salem has declared a Snow Emergency that will be in effect as of  10:00PM, on SATURDAY, FEBRUARY  21st until further notice.

Please remember that during the Snow Emergency a parking ban is in effect, and vehicles must be totally removed from city streets and sidewalks throughout the entire duration of the snow emergency or your vehicle will be ticketed and towed.

 Also, please note that vehicles must be removed from public and private parking lots, particularly at schools, immediately following the cancellation of the snow emergency (weekends included) or your car will be towed.

•               

(FYI: It is the policy of the DPS that snow removal will not take place in alternative parking areas, particularly at parks, until snow operations on city streets are completed. Please plan your vehicular needs accordingly.)

We would also like to thank you in advance for shoveling your sidewalks and ask that you also clear the snow around the hydrants near your property so that they can be accessible to firefighters in case of an emergency.

 Also, please be aware, snowplowing, shoveling, or throwing snow back onto the street when clearing driveways and sidewalks is prohibited by City Ordinance and violators can be fined.

SIDEWALKS

The removal of the snow and ice from sidewalks is greatly appreciated. This will help school children, the elderly, and the general public from having to walk in the street. The City of Salem clears designated sidewalks following each storm. It takes time to accomplish this task and it is only done after all the roads have been cleared.

•               

There are city ordinances requiring property owners to remove snow and ice from their bordering sidewalks within six hours after the snow ceases to fall or the city's snow emergency lights are turned off, whichever time is later. ~If the snow ceases to fall and the snow emergency lights are turned off in the nighttime, the snow shall be removed before 12:00 noon. If he/she neglects to do so, he/she shall be fined $25 for 1st offense, $75 for 2nd offense and $100 for 3rd and subsequent offenses.

DRIVEWAYS

While the Department of Public Services tries to minimize the amount of snow that gets plowed across driveways and exits, it is unavoidable. Clearing driveway openings is the responsibility of the property owner.

• Plow blades cannot be lifted as they pass by a driveway.

• Unfortunately, snow will be plowed into driveways as we perform curb-to-curb plowing.

• You may wish to clear your driveway several times during the storm or wait until the storm and plowing activities have ended.

ALTERNATIVE DESIGNATED PARKING AREAS

The City of Salem offers alternative designated parking areas that include the following:

* During a snow emergency, parking in the city garages is $5/24 hours, or any fraction thereof. Vehicles should be removed from the garage by the close of business the day the snow emergency concludes. Vehicles left in the garage after that time will begin to accrue charges at the regular hourly parking rate.

Public Forums to Discuss

Open Space and Recreation Planning

Monday, February 23 at 6:00 p.m. at 135 Lafayette Street

Monday, March 9 at 7:00 p.m. 120 Washington Street

The City of Salem has hired Gale Associates to conduct a Recreational Facilities Needs Assessment & Master Plan and to update the City’s Open Space & Recreation Plan. These plans will help guide investment in Salem’s parks and open spaces.

Two public forums will be held to gather input from the community. The first will be hosted by the Point Neighborhood Association on Monday, February 23 at 6:00 p.m. at the Community Room at 135 Lafayette Street. The second meeting will be Monday, March 9 at 7:00 p.m. in the 3^rd floor conference room at the City Hall Annex at 120 Washington Street. (Please note that a public meeting scheduled for February 9 was canceled due to a snowstorm.)

Mayor Kim Driscoll Recognizes ‘Salem Snowmaritans’ with Snowmageddon 2015 Limited Edition T-Shirts

Proceeds from sale of shirts will be donated to winter fuel assistance programs for needy residents

Salem, Massachusetts – Mayor Kim Driscoll is recognizing ‘Salem Snowmaritans’ with limited edition ‘I Survived Salem Snowmageddon 2015’ t-shirts in an effort to foster community spirit in the aftermath of the recent blizzards. Mayor Driscoll is encouraging Salem residents to nominate friends or neighbors who have gone above and beyond in helping others make it through this record setting winter.

“Surviving Salem Snowmageddon 2015 has not been easy,” said Mayor Driscoll. “This ridiculous amount of snow has given us good reasons to be grumpy, but it has also brought out the best in Salem as we’ve witnessed folks going above and beyond to help others during this unprecedented cold, hard winter. We've seen so many Salem residents pitching in to help others make it through this record setting winter.”

Residents can nominate ‘Salem Snowmaritans’ for a limited edition Snowmageddon t-shirt by sending an email toMayor@Salem.com with their name and phone number, name of the nominee, reason for their nomination, and the nominee’s recommended t-shirt size. Mayor Driscoll plans on sharing stories of ‘Salem Snowmaritanism’ on social media throughout the next few weeks.

“Nasty weather can’t beat Salem's sense of community,” continued Mayor Driscoll. “The storms have actually created shining examples of neighborly love throughout our city and we want to hear all about them. We’ll share these stories and help turn cold frowns into warm smiles by remembering what a great City we live in, even when the wind chill is 20 below! We hope folks will spread the good word through social media and help us beat back the blizzard blues by celebrating our undaunted community spirit.”

Additionally, the Mayor’s Office will be selling these limited edition t-shirts for $15 per shirt for those who would like to purchase a Snowmageddon t-shirt as a keepsake. All proceeds from the sales will go directly to the winter fuel assistance program for needy Salem residents administered through North Shore Community Action Programs. Residents can submit their orders toMayor@Salem.com until March 1^st.

Local designer Brent Leland of Leland Creative and Gorilla Printing, both of Salem, helped design and print the t-shirts, with the assistance of Kate Fox, Executive Director of Destination Salem.

Important Reminder from the Salem Building Inspector: Flat Roofs

With the recent record snowfall and the possibility of a rain/snow event this weekend, we are recommending that building owners that have flat roofs have the snow removed. We recommend using licensed and insured tradespeople. It is also important to make sure that all roof drains are clear of ice and are flowing properly.
