At The Gables, our talented guides will share a revamped guided tour that focuses on the history and role of women at The Gables. This special women-centered tour is offered at 12:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. We are delighted to welcome Dina Vargo to The Gables to talk about her new novel, The Hidden History of Boston. Delving into Pop Culture  We are excited to announce our upcoming exhibit, Pop! Goes The Gables opening on April 5. This exhibit focuses on the impact The House of the Seven Gables and Hawthorne’s novel have had on popular culture through various forms of media such as film, comics, and television. We examine the relationship between popular culture and identity, particularly the contributions made to American popular culture by immigrants.  We want visitors to leave with a sense of The House of the Seven Gables as an American cultural touchstone from the mid-nineteenth century to the present day. This mansion, now known as The House of the Seven Gables was vacant and retained little appearance of earlier days. Emmerton’s vision for the mansion, executed by the Colonial-Revival architect, Joseph Everett Chandler, gave us the unique place we now know. The Salem Athenaeum provided a behind-the-scenes tour of their private library, including a peek at some first-edition Hawthorne works. Many thanks to The Salem Athenaeum for hosting our members! In partnership with the North Shore CDC & the museum’s curators, Gables members will have the opportunity to partake in a guided tour of the Punto Urban Art Museum, the astounding outdoor mural art in Salem’s “The Point” neighborhood. Daughters of Ireland - A Quest for Freedom and Independence The second largest heritage claimed by Americans is Irish, with millions immigrating to the U.S. during the 19th and 20th centuries.  During the 1840s, the Irish made up nearly 50 percent of all immigrants.  In 1890, the U.S. census reported that 260,000 Irish immigrants had settled in Boston and 27,488 in Essex County. Upon Ellis Island’s opening in 1892, the first immigrant processed was a 15-year-old Irish girl named Annie Moore. During the 1890s, young single women made up 53 percent of Irish immigrants, making it the only immigrant group where men were outnumbered by women. Irish women established themselves as a force to be recognized. Continue Reading >> Gifts at The Gables One of the most generous individuals ever to live in Salem was Miss Caroline Emmerton. Born into family money from the old days of the shipping era, she saw a population of foreign immigrants struggling to settle into a new way of life. In a time before welfare, Miss Emmerton organized a committee and created a settlement house. Classes were started for immigrants to help them assimilate into their new community. To raise funding for those programs, Miss Emmerton bought the old Turner-Ingersoll mansion. She restored it to its former glory with admission fees to the house used to support the funding of her mission and preservation of the historic structure. The House of the Seven Gables Settlement Association is still in existence today assisting newly arriving immigrants. We look back at Miss Emmerton’s role in helping those in need of assistance and continue to fulfill her mission of fellowship. Interested in learning more about Caroline Emmerton? We are partnering up with Ye Olde Pepper Candy Companie to bring an ice sculpture to the Derby Street neighborhood as part of Salem Main Streets 17th annual Salem’s So Sweet Weekend. On Saturday and Sunday, view the ice sculpture, enjoy free ground's passes and take advantage of a 10% discount in our Museum Store. The Gables will be open from 10:00AM – 5:00PM on both days. On Saturday, February 9th, from 1:00PM – 3:00PM, visitors of all ages are welcome to try their hand at cookie decorating and a Valentine Craft event with Salem Parks, Recreation, and Community Services at our visitor center. A Sweet Confection Connection  The Salem Gibralter is the oldest commercially sold confection in the United States. The candy was first made in 1806 by the Spencer family who lived in North Salem. On the Spencer’s journey to America, their boat shipwrecked, and all their goods were lost. After arriving in Salem, their new neighbors came together and gave the family a barrel of sugar since Mrs. Spencer was a candy maker. The resulting candy was The Salem Gibralter. Ye Old Pepper Candy Companie still makes and wraps this candy in the same way today. Continue reading about our sweet neighbor >> Preservation Conservation at The Gables Every year, the House of Seven Gables takes a brief hiatus from hosting the public and closes for a few weeks to tackle projects not easily undertaken when visitors are touring the site.  This year we focused on what is known in the museum world as “preventative conservation.”  During this process we carefully assess and clean objects and spaces on exhibition.   We watch for certain key indicators: are the fluctuations in temperature and humidity in the rooms causing damage to the objects; is too much exposure to UV light a problem; are there any signs of pest activity that might be damaging the object and spaces? City of Salem Prepares for Opening of ATG

Third adult-use cannabis retail establishment in Massachusetts opens Saturday, December 15; customers required to make appointments online to visit the store.

SALEM – ATG, which in 2015 was Massachusetts’ first medical marijuana dispensary to open to the public, will open for adult-use cannabis retail sales on Saturday, December 15, becoming the third such establishment to open for business in Massachusetts.

The City of Salem has been actively coordinating for the last few weeks with ATG, Peabody Police, and the MBTA transit police in order to prepare for the upcoming opening of ATG for recreational marijuana sales. From the City’s perspective these efforts have included Salem Police, the Fire Department, the Mayor’s office, Traffic and Parking, Public Works, the Health Department, and the Building Department. The City is approaching this event similar to how it approaches large scale event planning and logistics in general in Salem.

Anyone planning to visit ATG after it opens for recreational marijuana sales on Saturday should utilize the online reservation system that will be online at www.atgma.org. ATG’s website will have detailed instructions for the purchasing procedures and other FAQ's. Customers without a reservation will not be allowed into the facility and will be turned away.

The City has imposed temporary resident-only parking zones in the neighborhoods closest to the store and enforcement for parking, traffic, and police patrol will be enhanced in this area of the City for the foreseeable future. Customers are advised to take the MBTA commuter rail to Salem and then take the ATG shuttle bus from the station to the store. The ATG shuttle bus will only transport customers with confirmation of a valid reservation and a photo ID.Do not drive to ATG.

Residents are encouraged to call the Salem Police at 978-744-1212to report illegally parked vehicles, trespassing, or any other nuisance behavior. In an emergency, dial 911
