October Nights with contributions from Anne Lucas October at The Gables is a very special time every year. The Legacy of the Hanging Judge and Spirits of The Gables, our annual theatrical productions, create an air of excitement, education, and fun. Fifteen years ago, Anne Lucas, a local writer, was asked to create theatrical performances to enhance the visitor experience in October. Ms. Lucas was inspired to write The Legacy of the Hanging Judge after a trip to the United States Memorial Holocaust Museum. “I saw the dangers that prejudice taken to extremes in any community can produce.” This performance, which takes place in the Hawthorne Birthplace, gives the visitor an opportunity to meet Nathaniel Hawthorne as he agonizes over his writing.  He hopes to expiate his guilt over his ancestor and witch trials judge, John Hathorne.. As the performance moves through the historic house, it goes back in time introducing us to the — meeting perpetrators and victims of the infamous Salem witch trials.  They warn us not to turn a blind eye to injustice “or it could be you in the cell here beside me.” Ms. Lucas was also given the task to enhance an existing performance when she developed Spirits of The Gables. This tour and performance allows the visitor to meet the characters from Nathaniel Hawthorne’s famous novel, The House of the Seven Gables. Lucas loves that, “we meet these “shades of the great Nathaniel Hawthorne’s mind” in the house that inspired their creation. The Ghost of Matthew Maule stalks the audience and warns that the Pyncheons will die horrible deaths — ‘God will give them blood to drink’ for the injustice done to him.  We find there is only one solution to this family feud — love.” Much like the year-round staff at The House of the Seven Gables, Anne Lucas enjoys the October season. “Every year it is so much fun to come back to The Gables with new actors and old regulars.  The wonderful staff feels like family.  So there is always a letdown when it is over.” Don’t be letdown as well! Visitors passionate about Salem and Halloween book travel months in advance, excited to be immersed in the unique history and fun that Salem Haunted Happenings presents. Haunted Happenings presents unique opportunities, including expanded programming and a festive atmosphere, and challenges, including traffic and longer waits for a table at your favorite restaurant. We have a few tips to offer to help you make the most of your visit to Salem during the height of the season. Do pack your patience! Lines can be long. Don’t cut the line – other people are waiting, too! Do dress for the weather so you don’t get caught in a snowstorm wearing your cute summer T, or melt in a wool sweater on a 75 degree day. Do bring cash for the garages and surface lots, which charge $20 on entry on weekends in October so that you don’t get a $40 parking ticket, and do plan to leave your car and walk between sites. Do check HauntedHappenings.org for road closures, traffic updates, and event listings so you don’t get stuck on Route 1A on Parade night (October 6) or Halloween. Do make reservations for events that take them, including Spirits of the Gables and Legacy of the Hanging Judge, so you don’t find yourself on the wrong side of a sold-out event!  Do be kind to the workers, staff, and volunteers in Salem. Don’t forget, they are doing their best to help you and others as quickly as they can! Finally, do have fun. October in Salem is a bewitching season filled with fun, frights, and a festive atmosphere. A children’s trade book that dealt with the topic of slavery was the centerpiece of the Gables’ summer program, Caribbean Connections. The book, The Red Hair Comb / La Peineta Colorada, was originally published in Spanish. The Gables obtained permission from the publisher to do a PowerPoint presentation of the book and unpack its richness in English for local educators. On August 30th, Ana Nuncio, Settlement Partnerships Manager, explored the book through a “picture walk” presentation.  Educators from the Salem Public Schools, Essex National Heritage, the Royall House and Slave Quarters  Museum, North Shore Community College, and historical researcher and educator Irene Axelrod attended the session. Three strands were highlighted in the PowerPoint presentation:  cultural notes, historical background about slavery in the Caribbean, and close-ups on vocabulary and figurative language that is used throughout the book. What's Happening in Preservation? The Retire Beckett House (1655) not only has a new roof, but is also receiving repairs to the siding on the north elevation. Wood siding on a historic buildings serves aesthetic and functional purposes. Clapboarding, both in style and color selection, help to define a building’s architectural style. Siding of any material acts like the “skin” of a building that helps to deflect sunlight, wind, and water. Because of its exposure to the elements, it needs to be replaced on occasion. The repairs taking place will help to protect the Retire Becket House for decades to come.   Members! Salem E-Waste Recycling September 24

Salem residents & property owners (with ID or tax bill) can recycle e-waste quarterly at Salem High School. The final two collections of 2016 are this one on September 24, and again on December 31.

Published in 1995, and no longer in print, the cookbook contained recipes that call for ingredients that could have been found in the home during America’s trading voyages between China and the West Indies over 300 years ago. These recipes may have been taught during settlement classes over 100 years ago. The first two families to live in The House of the Seven Gables, the Turners and the Ingersolls, were wealthy merchant families. They made their money by trading with places like the West Indies and China. This trade made exotic foods and spices available to wealthy families. Middle or lower class families had no access to these goods based on location and price. Caroline Emmerton held classes for young girls to learn how to cook and take care of a household. Cookbooks published long after these early programs, like Gathered at The Gables, keep the spirit of Caroline Emmerton and her settlement programs alive. Below are two recipes from the book that you can feel free to make at home: The Easiest Chicken Dish (Serves 6) 8 boneless, skinless chicken breasts 1 (10 ounce) can cream of chicken soup 1 cup sour cream ¼ cup white wine Paprika to taste Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Rinse the chicken breasts and pat dry. Arrange the chicken in a 9x13-inch baking dish. Combine the soup and the sour cream in a bowl; mix well. Spoon evenly over the chicken. Drizzle with the wine. Sprinkle with the paprika. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour. Fluffy Cheesecake (Serves 8) 11 whole graham crackers, crushed ¼ cup melted butter 11 ounces cream cheese, softened ¾ cup sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 egg yolks 2 egg whites 1 cup sour cream 2 tablespoons sugar Preheat the oven to 325 degrees. Combine the graham cracker crumbs with the melted butter in a bowl; mix well. Line a 10-inch pie plate with the mixture, pressing firmly. Beat the cream cheese with ¾ cup sugar in a bowl until smooth. Add the vanilla and the egg yolks; mix well. Beat the egg whites until stiff. Fold into the cream cheese mixture gently. Spoon in to the prepared pie plate. Bake at 325 degrees for 25 minutes. Let stand for 10 minutes. Mix the sour cream with 2 tablespoons sugar in a bowl. Spread over the cheesecake gently. Bake at 400 degrees for 5 minutes. Let stand until cool. Chill in the refrigerator overnight. She used proceeds from ticket sales to fund Settlement work for immigrant families. Educational programs and social services helped newly arrived immigrants settle into their new surroundings. Today's programs support the current needs of our immigrant community by bolstering the education of at-risk students, helping children and adults develop literacy skills, learn English, achieve citizenship, and reach for higher education goals. During Spirits of the Gables, get swept into Hawthorne’s tale of guilt, greed and revenge as the characters from The House of the Seven Gables(1851), come to life and recount their stories while you walk through the very house that inspired Hawthorne’s timeless novel. What's Happening in Settlement? The Gables’ summer enrichment program, Caribbean Connections, ended on August 5th with exhilarating results.  This year’s programming was characterized by more comings and goings than in previous years, and the movements of students from St. Peter’s / San Pedro Episcopal Church (where the program was housed this year) to various historical sites in Salem, Lowell, and nearby Bakers Island, transformed students and teachers. What made the earth move under our feet?  For students, it was the opportunity to glimpse new horizons and taste new opportunities.  For teachers, first-hand knowledge of homelessness in our community brought new realizations and professional growth. Towards the end of the program, one student’s family became homeless, but that student still showed up for class, bravely rehearsing her role in a play about moral courage and social justice. We thank our partners Essex Heritage, the National Park Service, the Salem Summer Meals program, St. Peter’s / San Pedro Episcopal Church, Salem State University, and LEAP/Salem at Sea for helping us enrich and expand the Caribbean Connections experience this year. What's Happening in Preservation The House of the Seven Gables has a dual mission—preservation and education. Our staff takes both parts of the mission seriously and we need your help. Our museum campus consists of seven historic structures ranging in dates from c.1665 to the early twentieth century. There is always a window to be fixed, a structure to be painted, a roof to be repaired, or a heating system to overhaul. Dear Neighbors - 

Here's what to expect from the Salem Cable Project this week.

As we've mentioned before, short-term trench patch replacement on New Derby and Derby Streets began this morning. Contractors are in the process of milling the temporary trench patch that runs between Lafayette Street and the Salem Harbor Station along New Derby Street and Derby Street. We expect to have the permanent tench patch in place by the end of Thursday. To ensure that this work progresses as quickly as possible, parking restrictions will be in effect during work hours.

Additionally, later this week, contractors are scheduled to complete resurfacing work on sections of Herbert Street, Hodges Street, Palfrey Court, and Union Street. The timeline for this work is also short—in most cases, work on a given street will be complete in less than a day. 

As always, police details will be present at our work sites to facilitate vehicle and pedestrian traffic management. Please use caution in and around these active work areas to minimize risks to your personal safety and to avoid any interference with construction.
