E-Views From The Gables - November 2017

Some Inspiration for the Ambitious Writer

by William Demick, Guest Contributer

November is National Novel Writing Month, when writers everywhere attempt to produce a novel in only thirty days. This is a task that requires a good deal of caffeine and dedication, let alone inspiration. Since we at The House of the Seven Gables cannot provide you with coffee, it is probably best that we focus instead on offering inspiration. Where better to look for that inspiration than Nathaniel Hawthorne’s own speedy contributions to literature - The Scarlet Letter (1850), The House of the Seven Gables (1851), and The Blithedale Romance (1852).

Share Your Stories of The Gables

In 2018, the famed House of the Seven Gables turns 350 years old. We would love to hear from you about your memories of the house. Did you visit here as a young child? Were you spooked by the Secret Staircase? Did you participate in settlement programs? Were you proposed to by the sea or did you get married on the compass rose? Were you inspired to read one of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s novels or even to write you own?

No story is too big or too small. Share your name, story, and even a picture if you have it. Each day in 2018, we’ll be sharing YOUR stories.  Click here to submit your memories

It Starts With Me Thanksgiving Drive

Each year the Salem-based charity It Starts With Me organizes a Thanksgiving Drive to help provide holiday meals to families and veterans in need on the North Shore. The meal kits include everything a family needs to prepare a meal together from roasting tins to butter.

The House of the Seven Gables is proud to be a collection site for the 10th annual event and to support a goal of offering dinner to more than 350 families in 2017. Non-perishable items that can be dropped off at The Gables between November 1 – November 17 include: Market Basket gift cards, gravy, tin turkey pans, stuffing, canned veggies, juice, cranberry sauce, and cooking oil.

Full details about the event can be found here.

As a thank you for your generosity, be sure to ask for a 10% off Museum Store coupon when you drop off your donation.

The Gables Needs a New Coat

The stalwart house at the end of Turner Street, known to us as The House of the Seven Gables, stands today on the very spot it has for 350 years. Seemingly ageless, the house has endured the harsh effects of time and weather thanks to the preservation efforts made by its many inhabitants and stewards.

The preservation of historic structures involves efforts on many fronts, some of which are not so glamorous. One such effort is the maintenance of the exterior facade through the application of protective finishes. Paint is the most obvious treatment on houses with wood siding, like The House of the Seven Gables. Paint acts as a barrier between the clapboards and decorative components of the structure, and the moisture that can cause rapid deterioration of these elements. However, this treatment is not designed to last forever. Exterior paint treatments on historic buildings usually need to be reapplied every 5 to 10 years.

The House of the Seven Gables is in need of a new paint treatment in time for its 350th birthday. If you would like to help the house get a new "coat" for 2018, please follow the link below to give what you can.
