Things don’t just happen. Someone has to work towards them; labor to bring about their completion. For almost 350 years people have labored in and around The House of The Seven Gables. House-wrights built the home. Families started and expanded businesses. Indentured servants labored to fulfill the terms of a contract, and enslaved people toiled to support and enrich their owners with no hope of ever being compensated for their endeavors...

Is mise Shiobhain Ní Shúilleabháin

In her first language, Joan Sullivan could introduce herself in two different ways: “Siobhain Ní Shúilleabháin is ainm dom” (“Joan O’Sullivan is the name at me”) or “Is mise Siobhain Ní Shúilleabháin” (“It’s myself Joan O’Sullivan”). In the course of many months of discussion with the writer-director of the theatrical experience, I Am Joan Sullivan, I’ve come to think of this project as “Is mise Shiobhain Ní Shúilleabháin.”

The Settlement Legacy -- Renewed, and Rising

Lishbeht Ramos, intern at The Gables during this past year, proudly graduated from Salem State University in May with a bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Early Childhood Education.
While at The Gables, she helped with various Settlement initiatives, including the celebration of Hispanic Heritage month and two voter registration drives last October...

The Gables will once again host members, friends and family as we celebrate the Fourth of July and the birthday of Nathaniel Hawthorne. Guests should bring their own picnic, blanket, and lawn chairs for a front-row seat to the City of Salem’s extraordinary fireworks display over the harbor...
