This offers a unique opportunity for the community to honor their friends and family, whether living or deceased. Bricks can be purchased and inscribed with the name of your family member or friend. Included with museum admission. 10am-5pm December 13, 2015 Home for the Holidays Festive family programming. Free and open to all. 2-4PM November 27-December 11, 2015 Shoebox Drive City of Salem initiative to collect personal care items for families.  The Gables will be a collection point. Donate during regular hours. Seamans' Visitor Center Coming up in January: January 1-15, 2016  January Shutdown Annual shutdown for routine maintenaince and preservation. The Gables will reopen on January 16 at 10am. The House of the Seven Gables again invited all Salem Public School students to create hand-made ornaments that reflect the many immigrant traditions around the holiday season in our North Shore area. The  hand-crafted ornaments will decorate the Settlement Heritage Tree, which will grace the Visitor Center throughout December. Teachers and students at the Nathaniel Bowditch School and Salem Academy Charter School confirmed their participation in the project. The public will be invited to purchase the finished ornaments from the Settlement Tree, and proceeds from the ornament sales will serve as donations to the museum. The one-of-a-kind ornaments will represent the immigrant populations that The Gables has supported over the past 105 years, in keeping with its Settlement mission.  All Settlement educational programs benefit immigrant students and their families, as well as other at-risk youth in our area. The Settlement Tree will go up on Thanksgiving weekend, and admission to view the display will be free to all. What's Happening in Preservation The first phases of construction of the Secret Rooms Project will be starting on two second-floor rooms in The House of the Seven Gables beginning in January. This will mark the start of a multi-year project with the end goal of opening these spaces to the public. The second-floor rooms are part of the original structure, and have been used for a variety of purposes since 1668. Update Cable Replacement Project

Dear Neighbors -

We wanted to provide a quick update from our current work sites on Fairfield Street, Fort Avenue, and Hawthorne Boulevard.  

As you know, duct bank installation continues on Fairfield Street and Fort Avenue. The Fairfield Street crew continues to make steady progress down the street in the direction of Cabot Street. With approximately three-quarters of the construction complete, over the next two weeks contractors expect to finish their work the street. 

Our crew on Fort Avenue is continuing their work as they trench and install duct bank in the direction of Essex Street. As a reminder this crew is goal is to finish the final stretch of duct bank between the Fort Avenue-Webb Street intersection, the Essex Street manholes, and a small section of Essex Street between English Street and Forrester Street.

Contractors at the Hawthorne Boulevard work site are also making good progress -- as of Wednesday morning the final manhole was set in the excavation. Moving forward, this manhole crew has some remaining underground work to complete, before they backfill, pave and prepare the work site to be reopened to regular traffic.

Police details will be present to facilitate vehicle and pedestrian traffic management around construction sites. We ask that those on foot exercise caution when approaching these active work areas to minimize risks to personal safety, and to avoid any interference with construction.

The House of the Seven Gables Monthly E-News November 2015 A Whole New View From The Gables Another fantastic October in Salem has come to an end, and we look ahead to the holiday season.  Beyond that, the coming year marks a milestone in the history of The House of the Seven Gables Settlement Association. In the year 2016, we will celebrate the 150th birthday of our founder, Caroline Osgood Emmerton with a special exhibition, lectures, and events. Emmerton was a visionary philanthropist and preservationist, who wanted to share with the world the wonderful history of The House of the Seven Gables, and enrich her community at the same time. Today, more than a century after the founding of The House of the Seven Gables Settlement Association by Ms. Emmerton in 1910, we want to share with you, our members and supporters, all of the events and happenings at The Gables in a new way. But we would like your feedback. We would like to provide a new, monthly e-news that will be sent out at the beginning of every month with upcoming events, featured articles, mission-specific updates, and more.  Each month will have a theme and important information regarding our site for that month. Rather than receiving numerous, scattered e-mails about upcoming events and programs, this new system will allow us to communicate with you, our supporters, on a more consistent and timely basis, and keep you up to date on all of the things going on at The Gables. In addition to the monthly e-news, we would also send a members-only quarterly print publication with substantial articles and more in-depth insights into what is going on here at The Gables. This quarterly publication would include 3 journals and 1 annual report.  As a membership benefit, this publication will supplement the monthly e-news by providing a more detailed look at The Gables, and will only go out to members. Photo courtesy of @thegraychampion From Our Dining Room To Yours The House of the Seven Gables Settlement Association is partnering with the Salem based charity It Starts with Me (www.iswmcharity.com) to help provide 150+ complete Thanksgiving dinners for local families. It Starts With Me has been managing this drive since 2009 when nine families were served. Demands have increased greatly over the years and the Gables is proud to help support this community event. Along with other sites around the city, the Gables will be collecting non-perishable goods including gravy, roasting tins, stuffing, canned vegetables, bottled juice, cranberry sauce, cooking oil, and gift cards to Market Basket which will be used to purchase turkeys and other perishable goods. When you bring your donations to the House of the Seven Gables, you will receive a 10% off museum store coupon, good for the month of November. Please bring your donations to the Seamans' Visitor Center at 115 Derby Street by November 22. Gifts at The Gables Our pewter Thanksgiving spoon is a great idea to bring as a hostess gift on November 26th. It has a traditional New England look, and depicts the Pilgrims landing in 1620. A lasting keepsake to grace the table, it can be brought out each year with the annual family gathering. On Saturday, Nov. 14th, The Gables will honor Nadely Nuñez, a sophomore at Salem High School, who will receive a House of the Seven Gables $500 scholarship for her demonstrated leadership and strong academic standing during the past school year. Ms. Nuñez was nominated for this honor by instructors from Salem High, LEAP for Education, and the Salem at Sea team at Salem State University.  The Gables awards the $500 scholarships yearly to young people through its community partners, who work with the students on various kinds of programs that serve immigrant students and other at-risk youth in Salem. The other Gables scholarship award  was given earlier this year to Amanda Castillo, student leader in our partnership with Express Yourself, an organization that serves teen through impressive arts immersion programming.  Amanda was also a sophomore when she was first awarded a Gables scholarship.  Last June she graduated from Salem High School, having earned a total of $1500 scholarship money from The Gables for her continuing leadership.  She plans to use her scholarship money to pursue a degree in nursing at Salem State University. What's Happening in Preservation The restoration of the roof on the Hawthorne Birth House is complete. Work on the roof was completed this October, but work on the gutters is ongoing. New red cedar shingles were added to maintain historical accuracy. Funding for restoration was supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council and the Salem CPA.
