November 2016 from the Gables

Closing Events for Celebrating a Vision

2016 has been a year of celebration at The House of the Seven Gables. The life and legacy of our founder Caroline Emmerton has allowed us to look back on our unique dual mission of preservation and education. We’ve hosted lectures, Community Conversations, and celebratory events marking the 150th birthday of our founder.

On November 16, we will be welcoming Judy Anderson for the final lecture in our Seven Lectures at Seven Gables series. She will share the history of changes in architecture and decorative arts as she talks about the history of Marblehead’s Lee Mansion, built in 1768, exactly 100 years after the Turner-Ingersoll Mansion. We have also added a bonus lecture to our calendar. On November 27, join us as we welcome
New York Times Bestselling Author Anita Diamant. Step back into the 1920’s with Diamant’s main fictional character, Addie Baum, and learn about life in Boston’s North End and the role that settlement work played with newly arriving immigrants. Both of these lectures are free for members and $7.00 for the general public.

In December, we’ll celebrate the holiday season with Christmas history tours, participate in the Salem Main Streets holiday window decoration contest, and feature our Home for the Holidays family event. Starting on December 5, stop into our visitor center, where you will find our Settlement Tree. Decorated with handcrafted ornaments made by Salem schoolchildren, this tree highlights the diverse cultures and countries from which our community represents. Pick out the perfect ornament—handcrafted by Salem’s schoolchildren—and support our modern settlement mission and Salem public schools art programs.

Details about all of our special events and tours are available at www.7gables.org. We look forward to finishing up our yearlong celebration with you in the closing months of 2016.

December Events

Holidays at The Gables
November 26 - December 31, times vary
The holiday season is a time for friends and family to be together, share memories, and make new ones.  Make memories this year at The House of the Seven Gables. We have special holiday themed events happening through December 31.

What's Happening in Settlement?

Hispanic Heritage Month, a national celebration of Hispanic history and culture that runs September 15 – October 15, afforded The Gables an opportunity to highlight the heightened significance of its Settlement mission in modern times.

As the topic of immigration swirls constantly in world and national news, The Gables holds fast to its original mission of welcoming and orienting new immigrants into the larger culture of the community.

To kick off the national observance of Hispanic Heritage Month, on September 15th The Gables presented its final immigration conversation of the season featuring Dr. Alexandra Piñeros Shields, Executive Director of Essex County Community Organization.  ECCO is a diverse network of congregations and organizations that work together across race, class, and denominations to ensure a good quality of life for all residents of the North Shore.

Dr. Piñeros’ talk, entitled “How Can We Reframe the Education Debate?” dealt with the troubling frames of reference that most Americans have when it comes to thinking about immigrants and immigration. She argued eloquently for a humane immigration policy for the larger good.

As a fitting bookend to Hispanic Heritage Month, The Gables generously supported the Latino Leadership Coalition of Salem in planning and hosting the second annual Hispanic Heritage event to recognize 20 Latino public servants.  The honorees were full-time Latino public employees dedicated to serving Salem’s Latino population.

Honorees at the October 13th ceremony included School Superintendent Margarita Ruiz, educators, guidance counselors, police officers, firefighters, case managers, bus drivers and bus monitors, and building custodians.

What's Happening in Preservation?

This season has seen much activity in the area of buildings and grounds. A new wood shingle roof has been installed on the Retire Beckett house. This job also included new facia, gutters and rake boards. New clapboards have been installed on the north side as well. In addition, Nathaniel Hawthorne's Birthplace is currently seeing repairs.  Some of the clapboards are being replaced and repairs are being made to the window sills and trim.  This will be followed by painting.

A team of volunteers from Salem State painted the fence on Turner St. early in September and fence replacement on the waterside is slated to begin this week. This summer also saw continued repairs to window sills and trim etc. on the Tea Room and Visitors Center.

Despite the drought the grounds are in remarkable condition. The gardens have never looked lovelier and the grass has remained green throughout this trying weather.  The Chestnut tree planted a few years back (the generous donation of our friend Paul Soucy) is beginning to come in to its own and now graciously complements our lawn area.  We look forward to  a busy and successful fall season.
