This offers a unique opportunity for the community to honor their friends and family, whether living or deceased. Bricks can be purchased and inscribed with the name of your family member or friend. Salem Town Pump Fountain Rehabilitation Project Update

Subject: Salem Town Pump Fountain Rehabilitation Project Update

Please be advised that work to rehabilitate the Town Pump Fountain at the corner of the Essex Street Pedestrian Mall and Washington Street will continue through mid to late August. The delay in completing the project stems from a few unexpected issues that have arisen with respect to drainage and plumbing. The project team quickly identified solutions to these issues and has moved forward as expeditiously as possible.

Aspects of the project that remain include one additional concrete pour, the installation of pump components, installation of the basin (etched concrete components) and grating, and re-bricking of the plaza area around the fountain.

The Pedestrian Mall will be kept open for pedestrian access and deliveries through the period of construction; however, there may be periods of time when vehicular access for deliveries will be restricted at the Essex and Washington Streets Intersection.

53rd Annual Salem Heritage Days Begins August 1st

Salem, MA – Mayor Kim Driscoll today announced this year’s Heritage Days schedule of events, which begin on Friday, August 1^st and continue through Sunday, August 10^th. 

“Heritage Days has been a long standing tradition in Salem and this year we have ten days of fun-filled events,” said Mayor Driscoll. “With almost forty different activities to choose from, there is something for everyone to enjoy. Come join us as we celebrate Salem being such a great place to live, work, and visit.”

To put everyone in a festive mood, this year’s Heritage Days kick-off event is a concert on the Common with music by the Civil Disturbance Jazz Band. This local area band will play a selection of jazz and show tunes. The concert is sponsored by the Salem Common Neighborhood Association. 

Also new for the first weekend of Heritage Days is the Bridgin G.A.P.S. concert at the Salem Willows. The goal of Bridgin G.A.P.S is to provide a festive, entertaining, and educational platform for the local community to gather and celebrate in a safe and positive environment while connecting with community resources. Performances range from local and non-local recording artists, live bands, dance groups, poets, and other performance styles along with guest speakers from various non-profit and charitable organizations.

All of the favorites are also packed into the schedule: join Mayor Driscoll on a tour of three of Salem's hot dining spots during the Mayor's Night Out Restaurant Sampler; Tour-A-Truck; Salem’s Best Pizza Contest; the Salem Community Concert Band; the Ice Scream Bowl; Kids Night on the Common; the Essex Street Fair; and the 13^th Annual Phillips House Antique Car Meet are just a few of the events back for this year’s Heritage Days.

During Heritage Week there are also four activities just for Salem Seniors: an ice cream social, a barbecue, a wellness fair, and a dinner dance.

Also, just for Salem residents, there are many free admissions to our local museums and attractions, such as the Peabody Essex Museum, the Salem Witch Museum, the Salem Trolley, the Witch House, and Pioneer Village, and the Salem Ferry will offer a 20% discount plus $5 off a ferry ride. Another new special Salem resident event being hosted by the Salem YMCA is the ‘Forest River Pool Red, White and Blue Blowout’: it’s July 4^th in August at the Forest River Pool. Wear your red, white and blue to the Forest River Pool on August 6^th from 6pm to 8pm and participate in themed games and activities.

As part of the celebration, the City of Salem will double the merchant one-hour validation stamps at both garages, so spend a little bit longer enjoying downtown (some restrictions do apply).

New platform lets public submit service requests directly to City departments by the web or mobile app

The City of Salem has launched a new online tool to streamline the process for requesting city services or reporting an issue anywhere in the City. Mayor Kim Driscoll announced earlier today the official launch of the new Commonwealth Connect app, available athttp://seeclickfix.com/apps, and website, athttp://seeclickfix.com/salemma.

The program allows residents to report non-emergency issues, such as graffiti and potholes, in real time directly to the appropriate City department for resolution.Residents with smartphones candownload the appfree of charge to any iPhone or Android device to report issues straight from the palm of their hands. The program can also be accessed by clicking the SeeClickFix button at www.salem.comfrom a computer or other web-enabled device.

Since City officials and staff are not able to be in all places at all times, this new tool makes it possible for everyone to pitch in, keeping Salem a great place to live, work, learn, and play. With just a few clicks, anyone can report and monitor problems. Commonwealth Connect makes it easy and accessible for everyone to communicate concerns in real time.

With the program, users can submit problems directly to the appropriate City staff, along with detailed information, descriptions, and even a photo. Residents do not need to create an account to submit a request, they may do so anonymously. Using the GPS function on the smartphone, the program can pinpoint the precise location of the issue, or it can be entered manually. Users can view, comment on, or update issues that have already been reported, and share issues by posting them to Facebook, Twitter, and more. Finally, users can stay up to date and receive messages whenever another user or the City has an update on an issue the user has submitted or is following.

Commonwealth Connect can be used to report a wide variety of non-emergency issues, including road defects, sidewalk repairs, tree pruning, line painting requests, missing street signs, nonfunctioning street lights, missed trash and recycling pick-ups, graffiti incidents, and more.

When someone submits a service request on SeeClickFix, the City will post a confirmation that the issue was received and a service number for tracking purposes. Others in the community can sign on to follow the status of the issue. Residents are encouraged to check-in to see the status of their requests and sign up in order to receive email notifications to find out when they have been resolved.

In addition to Commonwealth Connect, the City is launching next week a wiki for Salem municipal government and City services called Knowledge Base. This program will also be accessible by clicking the SeeClickFix button at www.salem.comand in the Commonwealth Connect mobile app on smartphone. Knowledge Base is a comprehensive tool to provide citizens with access to information and answers. Because it is a wiki, the Knowledge Base continually improves as citizens and city officials add new questions and answers. Citizens can search for answers, ask the City new questions, or answer each other’s questions. The City can post answers to citizen questions and tag “official” answers.

The Commonwealth Connect tool was developed by SeeClickFix, a New England based organization that has become the most widely-distributed citizen reporting tool in the country.

Participating municipalities using the application include Ayer, Barnstable, Bedford, Braintree, Brookfield, Chicopee, Chilmark, Clarksburg, Eastham, Easton, Everett, Fall River, Fitchburg, Framingham, Franklin, Halifax, Haverhill, Holliston, Hopkinton, Lexington,~Malden, Medway, Melrose, Middleborough, Nantucket, Needham, New Bedford, Newton, North Adams, North Andover, Northampton, Orange, Randolph, Revere, Royalston, Seekonk, Somerville, Sudbury, Taunton, Wakefield, Ware, Watertown, West Boylston, Westborough, Whitman, Woburn, and Worcester. In addition, Commonwealth Connect is integrated with the systems of eight additional communities, including Andover, Boston, Chelsea, Lowell, Quincy, Saugus, Swampscott, and Worcester, bringing the total number of communities connected up to 54. If a user of the app is in one of those 54 communities and identifies an issue that needs to be addressed, they can report it using the one app on their smartphone.

This Saturday, July 26th,  the City will continue its e-waste drop off program at the Department of Public Services located at 5 Jefferson Avenue, from 8:00 a.m. until noon. 

All TVs, Computers, and Appliances* (*including but not limited to air conditioners, microwaves & refrigerators) will be charged a $10 fee.

All other acceptable items with a plug will continue to be FREE. 

This monthly program will continue through December 2014, always the last Saturday of the month.  If you have any questions, call the Engineering Dept. at 978-619-5673.

Forest River Wild Edibles Walk with Iris Weaver, Saturday, July 26 from 11:00-12:30

DESCRIPTION:  This special walk will take us through forested wetlands to see what wonderful wild edibles are available in our area. While we won't be able to harvest the edibles, you will have a chance to see what you can forage and eat in other areas, or perhaps in your backyard!

This FREE walk is sponsored by Salem's Conservation Commission and organized by Environmental Educator, Stacy Kilb.  Rain date is Sunday, Aug. 24 at 11:00.

DIRECTIONS:  Take Loring Ave. to Harrison Rd., which brings you to Salem State University's South Campus parking lot.  Gather at the trailhead sign at the back of the lot.

Salem Waterfront Hotel and Marina expansion

The plan to expand the Waterfront Hotel and Suites will again go before the Salem Planning Board on Thursday night, according to the board's agenda.

The $12 million expansion plan calls for a new building perpendicular to the existing hotel and closer to the water’s edge, according to Symmes Maini & McKee Associates, which is designing the project for owner Rockett Management.

The new building will replace the existing marina building, according to the Planning Board and SMMA, and will include 36 hotel suites plus 14 apartments on the two upper floors, ranging in size from 850 to 1,400 square feet.

The new building will create a new entrance for the hotel and be connected to the existing hotel with a glass bridge. The plan also includes off-site parking at 25 Peabody St., according to the plans.

The plan first went before the Planning Board back in April.

The public hearing will be during the Salem Planning Board meeting on Thursday, which starts at 7 p.m. in room 313 at the City Hall annex at 120 Washington St.

Subject: Teen Trip Camp - Salem Parks & Recreation
The Salem Park and Recreation Department is offering an exciting opportunity for children in grades 6-8.  Teen Trip Camp is a weeklong camp which includes taking a field trip every day!  This camp is geared to getting your child out and about to explore area attractions, be active and socialize with their friends.

Trips include Kayaking for the day in Salem Sound, heading to Boston to take the Fenway Park tour, explore Faneuil Hall, the North End and taking a cruise on a whale watch.  The camp is offered the weeks of July 21 and August 11, from 9am-4pm.  The camp meets at Forest River Park most days unless otherwise noted.  Registration is required.  To register please visit www.salemrec.com.

The Annual Historic Derby Street Neighborhood Association cookout on Friday evening July 25th, beginning at 6:00 pm with appetizers, BYOB, and soft drinks. Please note that this is a change from the originally posted date.

Independence Day celebrations in Salem, Massachusetts postponed to July 6

Salem, MA – Due to the weather forecast, Salem, Massachusetts, will hold their Independence Day celebrations on Sunday, July 6. All planned festivities originally scheduled for July 4 at Derby Wharf will still take place, but on Sunday July 6 instead. These include the Hillyer Festival Orchestra pops concert and fireworks display, among other activities.

The reading of the Declaration of Independence, originally planned for 9:00 a.m. on July 4 on Salem Common will still take place at 9:00 a.m. on July 4, but has been relocated to inside the Hawthorne Hotel. Finally, the United States Air Force Heritage Band, the Blue Aces, will still be performing their free concert on noon on Saturday July 5 at the Salem Willows.

Celebrate America’s Independence Day all weekend in historic Salem with the July 4 reading of the Declaration of Independence, followed by the Blue Aces concert on Saturday, and ending Sunday with the fireworks display and pops concert on Derby Wharf.
