Passing of Councillor Joseph A. O’Keefe, Sr.

SALEM, MA – At approximately 1:45 p.m. this afternoon, Ward 7 City Councillor and former Massachusetts State Fire Marshal Joseph A. O’Keefe, Sr., passed away at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers, surrounded by his family.

Councillor O'Keefe, the dean of the Salem City Council, was elected to the Ward 7 seat in 2000, but served prior to that as the Ward 2 Councillor from 1962 to 1973 and on the Salem School Committee from 1975-1979. For 15 years he was the Massachusetts Fire Marshal, from 1977 to 1992. Councillor O'Keefe was a lector at Immaculate Conception Church of Salem and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1524. He held a Master's degree in education from Harvard University and an undergraduate degree in fire safety technology from Oklahoma State University.

“We want to say thank you to everyone who wrote, called, or reached out over the difficult last few days,” the O’Keefe family stated. “We are all incredibly saddened to say goodbye to a man who was such a loving and beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather, and great grandfather. He has touched the lives of so many people, not just in our family, but also in this community, in such a positive way. Joe was a man of integrity, who thought of others before himself and never hesitated to speak his mind. He served the public and his country with honor and distinction, but never lost perspective of what mattered most: his family.”

“I am deeply saddened by the passing of Councillor O’Keefe, a man whose love of Salem was only exceeded by his love for his family,” said Salem Mayor Kim Driscoll. “Joe was a dear friend and colleague, someone whose warmth and generosity were unmatched. My most sincere condolences go out to Camille and the entire O’Keefe family. In everything he did, everything said, and every action he took, Joe always put the people of Salem first. His compassionate and energetic voice will be missed on the Council, in City Hall, and throughout our City. Joe always liked to remind us: ‘family first’. But I think in his 26 years on the City Council he demonstrated more clearly than anyone could that, in a way, all of Salem was Joe’s family.”

A wake will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, September 18, with a funeral mass scheduled for Saturday, September 19, at 10:00 a.m. Both the wake and funeral will be held at Immaculate Conception Church, 30 Union Street, in Salem and are open to the public.

On Monday, September 14th the HDSNA meeting will host Salem Mayor Kimberley Driscoll. After her remarks there will be time for questions for the mayor from Derby Street residents. The meeting will take place at the House of the Seven Gables, 115 Derby Street beginning at 7:00 pm.
Save the date for the October meeting on October 12th when local historian Jim McAlister will be our featured speaker. We will be changing venues and will meet at the Hawthorne Hotel but the meeting time will stay the same - 7:00 pm.

 City of Salem Releases Fall Entrance Corridor Street Sweeping Schedule

 SALEM, MA – Salem Mayor Kim Driscoll today announced the fall entrance corridor street sweeping schedule which will begin on Tuesday, September 1 and run through September 11.

 Entrance corridor sweeping will take place between 5:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. on the following dates. New this year, we have stream-lined the sweeping of entrance corridors and re-aligned some of the days corridors will be swept, so please take an extra minute to review this fall schedule. Each corridor will be swept over a period of two consecutive days which will alternate between the odd and even side of the streets. Also, as we did last spring, City workers will be utilizing blowers to clear corridor sidewalks of debris prior to the street sweeping.

Each corridor will be posted with temporary ‘No Parking/Tow Zone’ signs and parking will be prohibited between the hours of 5:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m.

 

Tuesday, September 1: Odd side of Boston Street and Essex Street (from Boston St. to North St.).

Wednesday, September 2: Even side of Boston Street and Essex Street (from Boston St. to North St.).

Thursday, September 3: Odd side of North Street.

Friday, September 4:Even side of North Street.

Tuesday, September 8: Odd side of Loring Avenue and Lafayette Street (from Derby St. to Marblehead line).

Wednesday, September 9: Even side of Loring Avenue and Lafayette Street (from Derby St. to Marblehead line).

Thursday, September 10: Odd side of Bridge Street.

Friday, September 11: Even side of Bridge Street.

 

Please be aware that certain weather conditions prohibit the use of the street sweepers: during moderate to heavy rainfall and extreme cold temperatures sweepers will not be able to operate. Weather cancellations will be posted on www.salem.com

 

Residential neighborhood street sweeping will begin on September 14 and continue through October 9. The residential schedule will be released shortly.

It was worth the wait! Time for the annual HDSNA potluck summer picnic on Friday, August 28th at 6:00 pm behind Dave Eng Flowers, 136 Derby Street.

Derby Street neighborhood residents and businesses and their guests are invited to bring either an appetizer, side dish or dessert to share. Grills will be fired up ready for you to grill whatever you want to bring. HDSNA will provide paper goods and soda. BYO wine or beer only.

 Good evening -

We're happy to announce that the fourth manhole installation (Fort Avenue) is now complete!

With construction at four out of the six manhole sites associated with the Salem Cable Project complete, this morning contractors began setting up the new work site on Essex Street, and began excavating for the manhole installations on the street. 

Please note that eastbound traffic on Essex Street will be detoured on to English Street. The westbound lane of Essex Street remains open. Extra parking is available for residents at the Bentley School lot on Szetela Lane. As work progresses at this site we plan to keep you updated with more information regarding timeline to completion. 

Today on Washington Square South, contractors continued working to connect the duct bank to the new manhole installations. Once connected contractors will continue installing duct bank in the direction of Washington Square East. Please be aware that it will be approximately two weeks until contractors are ready to begin work on Forrester Street.

This week on Congress Street contractors finished connecting the manholes to the duct bank near the corner of Congress Street and Dow Street. With these connections in place this crew will re-start the process of installing duct bank heading towards Leavitt Street.
