Join us for wickedly good family fun at The House of the Seven Gables!

Every Wednesday in October visitors can enjoy our family navigation game exploring our grounds with a map and compass in hand. You will ‘sail’ between different ‘ports’ and learn interesting facts along the way. This activity is free with paid admission.

From 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesdays up to two kids (17 and under) are admitted for free with every full-priced adult ticket purchased.

Finding kid-friendly activities during Salem Haunted Happenings doesn’t need to be a nightmare — with harbor cruises, storytime, and of course trick-or-treating, there are plenty of things to do with kids this October!

By David Moffat

Jonathan Ingersoll was a first cousin of Captain Samuel Ingersoll, a prior owner of The House of the Seven Gables. Jonathan Ingersoll was a second lieutenant in the Revolution and a well-versed sea captain. With his first wife, Mary Hodges, they had six children. In 1926, the genealogist Lillian Drake Avery wrote, "Capt. Ingersoll is remembered with great respect… He was that rarity in men who have followed the sea as a man who neither used liquor or profanity. His house was a veritable treasure house of curiosities from the Indies."

However, after Mary’s untimely death another side to Captain Jonathan Ingersoll emerged, a side that appeared possessed with an irrepressible desire to see his deceased wife. This possession led a bereaved sea captain to dig up the earthly grave of his first wife.

The Gables community came together last month to preserve, share and continue the American story as one of 316 sites across the nation to host a Naturalization Ceremony, and to mark Constitution Day and Citizenship Day. We welcomed 29 proud new Americans from around Essex County who took the oath to become U.S. citizens. In addition to meeting all the requirements of United States Custom & Immigration Services (USCIS) to become an American citizen, individuals dedicate many hours preparing for the interview and civics test and pay fees set at $725.

Nestor & MarilynStudents like Marilyn Cabrera, a native of the Dominican Republic, invested many hours in preparing for her interview with the assistance of our citizenship instructor, Nestor Grullón.

We welcome our new citizens, who hail from all over the world: Australia, Cabo Verde, China, Congo (Kinshasa), Cuba, Czech Republic, Denmark, Dominican Republic, Greece, Guatemala, Haiti, India, Liberia, Panama, South Sudan, Uganda, United Kingdom.
